On 16th June 2023, Total Energies in partnership with Blowplast and Mr. Green Africa led the launch of the new 20L lubricant jerrycan made from recycled plastic. These containers not only provide an eco-friendly solution but also maintain the exceptional quality our partners expect. The partnership has seen us revolutionizing the plastics industry by incorporating recycled plastic into the value chain. This is a significant step forward in a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and creating a greener future. By utilizing recycled materials, we are reducing waste and contributing to a circular economy.
Blowplast Group MD Mr. Sanjay Brahmbhatt took the opportunity to officially welcome everyone to the big event and stated that Blowplast values partnerships with its customers.
“We always value Total Energies and are happy to partner with them on such projects. Two years ago, we partnered with Total for project pure to reduce plastic weight reduction by 30% and it’s a project that has been running successfully. Today we partner with them for the PCR project that we’ve gathered to launch,” he said.
Blowplast Group Chairman Mr. Hanish Chandaria during the event said, “Climate change needs to be reversed. When we look at such kind of partnerships, we have no choice but to leave a place better than we found it by creating a greener environment. The consumption of plastics as far as Total Kenya is concerned, or plastic containers Blowplast is producing has been reduced by 30%.”
“Now with the new target of 40% on the PCR project, we want to use locally sourced waste to convert to plastic packaging and it’s something we are all going to be proud of,” he added.
Mr. Hanish Chandaria also mentioned that these kinds of partnerships have not been built overnight and that it’s been quite a journey as far as Total and Mr. Green are concerned.
Four years ago, Mr. Green Africa in collaboration with Blowplast launched a 100% recycled Kenyan-sourced plastic bottle for Unilever. As a market-leading plastic manufacturer, we are thrilled that we are entering this new phase with the lubricant industry and we’re glad it’s Total Energies, whom we’ve had a 20-year-old relationship with.
Mr. Green Africa CEO Mr. Keiran Smith took the opportunity to thank both partners for their commitment, passion, and patience and for believing in the recycled plastic narrative.
Mr. Keiran Smith talked about the possibility of recycling material to create local value addition and use it in packaging. “Currently, we are locally buying 5000 tonnes a year of plastic waste, processing it into high-quality content, and bringing it back as packaging. The future is however bright for Mr. Green as we want to invest heavily into scaling up the capacity by processing 20,000 tonnes a year for the local market,” he said.
Total Energies MD Mr. Eric Fanchini during the big event appreciated both partners for their commitment that has enabled the success of this particular project. “To achieve a recycled package, you need to have the full system in place, people to collect, people to recycle, and people to reproduce,” he mentioned.
Mr. Olagoke Aluko (Executive Vice President East & Central Africa Total Energies M&S Africa) concluded the speeches by saying that he’s extremely excited about the milestone of all partners coming together to provide tangible solutions in line with Total’s ambition to get to net zero by 2050.
The event ended by unveiling the new 20L Total jerrycan and Blowplast team handing it over to the Total team. Blowplast believes that every effort counts and this collaboration demonstrates our dedication to making a positive impact. Together, we can drive change and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
